Welcome to Ashgrove Cottage

It is our desire to make your stay memorable. A warm welcome, cozy comfortable rooms, good food, peaceful surroundings – a good start to enjoying all that Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer.

We are conveniently located on Mississauga Street, the main street coming into Niagara-on-the-Lake. A beautiful, leisurely walk will take you to the shores of Lake Ontario, to the centre of town with all of the shops, excellent restaurants and of course, the three Shaw Festival theatres. A short distance further brings you to historic Fort George or to the walking, biking and rollerblading trails along the gorgeous Niagara Parkway.

Ashgrove Cottage is a Victorian-style home. The rooms are warm and inviting. Guests are free to sit and relax in the comfortable living room, enjoy the sound of the ponds in our shaded backyard garden, take a drink out to the large front verandah or the side secret garden.

We are a cycle-friendly bed & breakfast, and a participating member of Cycle & Stay Niagara.

A full hot breakfast is served in the dining room each morning, usually at 8:30 or 9:00am, but we can be flexible. A usual menu would include juice, tea and coffee, fresh fruit, a choice of cereals, yogurt, a hot entree and fresh home-made baked goods. We want to be sensitive to people with food allergies, so please inform us when booking your stay. A full gluten-free menu is available on request.

If you’d like the latest news on Ashgrove cottage, including special events going on in the Niagara Region and around Ashgrove Cottage, visit the Ashgrove Cottage blog.

We look forward to sharing our home with you,

Wine & Theatre

Wine Tours
With 30+ wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, what is the best way to visit them? If you would like a guided tour, there are several companies that provide that service. We recommend Grape Escape. You can be picked up and dropped off at our home and they have a variety of options to choose from. They also do cycling wine tours. To see their offerings, you can book through us or from their website.

We have bicycles available for guests to use (at their own risk). We also have coupons for free wine tours at several wineries and free tastings at others. Guests enjoy taking the bikes and wine coupons, cycling along the beautiful Niagara Parkway and stopping off for tastings and something to eat at their leisure on a fun, relaxing day.
Shaw Theatre
The Royal George, The Courthouse, the Festival & Studio Theatres all present excellent quality theatre from April through mid-October. If you’d like to see the scheduling, visit the Shaw’s website here.
Music Niagara
There are four concentrated weeks in addition to concerts throughout the year. Come and visit, and experience excellent quality musical performances. For more information, feel free to visit Music Niagara’s website.

History & Activities

Historical Walks
Visit the excellent Museum in Niagara-on-the-Lake to learn the pre-European history of the area. Other exhibits cover from 1790 up to present day. Historical walks are available through the Museum on designated days.

Fort George is open to the public and, throughout the summer, has soldiers and others in period dress offering information, explaining exhibits and entertaining visitors with historical re-enactments. Who did win the War of 1812?

Niagara-on-the-Lake, or Newark as it was known then, was the first capital of Upper Canada. The Niagara area was an end of the Underground Railroad, bringing escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. You can tour many of the Underground Railroad historical sites. Did you know Niagara-on-the-Lake was the first place in the British Commonwealth to outlaw slavery?
Cycle & Stay
The Greater Niagara Circle Route is a well-planned system of over 140 km of paved, off-road trails and roadways. It winds along the Niagara River bordered by fruit orchards and vineyards, runs past the majestic Niagara Falls, and follows the sandy shores of Lake Erie. It offers “up close” views of the ships passing through the locks of the Welland Canal and opportunity to enjoy the beautiful historic towns such as Niagara-on-the-Lake. For more information, visit the website here.
…and Much More
The Jet Boats, horse-drawn carriage rides, the horticultural gardens & butterfly conservatory, hiking at the Niagara Glen, horseback riding along the escarpment…so much to do. Or you can sit, read a book and enjoy the beautiful landscape that is part of one of the prettiest towns in Canada.
